The Journey To Becoming An Advocate For The Poor by Jason Miles

The Journey To Becoming An Advocate For The Poor by Jason Miles

Over the last 30 years, I've been passionate about a lot of ministry projects. From the slums of Mexico City, to hospitals in Ukraine. Remote villagers in the highlands of Honduras that needed housing. Orphanages in Romania. Kids with AIDS in Ethiopia. Moms who need help in Zambia.

The Journey To Becoming An Advocate For The Poor by Jason Miles

Maybe you've had a life filled with a desire to help others too? Or maybe you're new to it and Sew Powerful is the first time you've really gotten involved. Either way, you're on a journey.

Here is how the journey works in my experience:

1. God brings something to your attention. Through a video. A news report. A sermon. A book. A story shared by a friend.

2. Your heart hears the cry of the suffering. You cannot ignore it.

3. You grieve for what's been lost. For the wronged. For the broken. You desire justice.

"You find a way, with God's grace and help, to do something."

4. You begin to imagine a righted situation. To see how things should be - even though they are not.

5. You try and find a way to respond. Maybe prayer. Maybe giving. Maybe going. You want to get involved in the healing. The recovery. The end of the suffering and the beginning of new life.

6. You find a way, with God's grace and help, to do something and a ministry effort begins. Or you don't, and the compassion subsides over time.

7. When your involvement blooms - and you begin to see a difference being made - you naturally want to tell people about the break-through. The progress. The difference that's being made.

8. You share about it - and your friends - when you are really, really lucky - begin to care too. To have a friend who grabs hold of the vision with you is an incredible feeling. Two are stronger than one - and together you become much more powerful. Your strength is renewed. You encourage each other. You transcend the petty challenges and become laser beam focused on your goal of making a difference.

9. God blesses your work - and makes it a blessing to you too.

"Two are stronger than one - and together you become much more powerful."

This last part - where you become an advocate, that's a powerful step in your journey. Where your friends get involved - you begin to see the multiplication of compassion. That's what we're seeing this month with our Sew-A-Thon. And we’ve seen it time and time again over the years in various ways.

Here are 2 tangible ways you and your friends can get involved today:

We are so grateful for your partnership… this ministry would not be changing nearly as many lives without YOU. Together we are Sew Powerful.

Sew Powerful Purse Program

Our annual Sew Powerful Purse program enables girls to stay in school. Purses are made and sent to Zambia as gifts. The local seamstresses in Zambia make re-usable hygiene pads and together they are provided to girls as part of health (MHM) training. Get Involved
