This familiar story of Jesus demonstrates that He came to bring light and life to all - even someone who was a cultural pariah - a Samaritan woman.
EPISODE #105
The Woman at the Well
ABOUT THIS PARABLE
- Concept:A Samaritan woman walks to the village well in the heat of the day to draw water. She sees a man sitting in the edge of the well. Recognizing him as a Jew, she is upset as Jews and Samaritans don’t mix. When the man (Jesus) asks her to draw water for him, it starts one of the most well-known dialogues of Jesus in the Bible.
- Story Origin: The Bible (John 4:7-26)
- Setting: Bible Times
-
Precept(s):
- In announcing himself as Messiah to a “despised” Samaritan, Jesus was demonstrating that he came as the Savior of all people.
- Jesus taught that it wasn’t traditions or locations that were important in the Kingdom of God – it was worshiping in spirit and truth.
- Key Bible Verse: John 4:7-10 When a Samaritan woman said to him, “You are a Jew and I am a Samaritan woman. How can you ask me for a drink?” (For Jews do not associate with Samaritans). Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God and who it is who asks you for a drink, you would have asked him for living water.”
- Additional Verses: Matthew 9:12
